Nutrition Therapy PDF Print E-mail

What does Nutritional Therapy Involve?

A Nutritional Therapy session will firstly involve filling out a detailed questionnaire in the initial instance (prior to the session) so that you can get the most out of your time with the therapist, and you can get the best assistance to help you with the things you wish to improve within your body and your health and well-being.

The questionnaire will ask for some basic medical history, including family medical history so that we can build up an accurate picture of any family history that may affect you in future, and plan accordingly. It will also look at why you wish to commence Nutritional Therapy, and what you are looking to get out of your sessions. We will also look at any medications and/or supplements that you may be taking to see how these are helping / affecting you. We will also look at your background, to build up a picture of how your life was and how it is at the present time. This way we can both work together to ensure that you are getting the best care possible.

Each session lasts approximately 1 hr. It is advised that you look at Nutritional Therapy as being a mid- to long-term treatment. It is not something that can be considered a ‘quick fix’ solution that will have you fixed within a couple of weeks. The best way to look at Nutritional Therapy is to see it as an investment in your own health, and your best future prospects.

What should I bring with me?

All you need to bring with you to the first session is yourself. The questionnaire should be returned prior to the session so that any medications can be checked, and that the therapist can make some notes and questions to further assess your situation with you. If you have any questions that you may wish to ask at the session, then please feel free to write them down and bring them with you.

Will I have to go on a strict diet?

That will depend upon what issues need to be addressed. If there is an issue that may benefit from a restricted diet in the short term then it may improve the quality of your life at the same time as allowing us to work out what the issue is that is affecting you – and then alleviate it and work on improving your nutritional well-being.

With other issues it may be that a certain food or food group may need to be removed from the diet in the short term to assess how it affects you. With other ailments it could be just some small adjustments that are required. Overall, it will depend upon what your current diet is like and what your situation dictates as to how we will proceed. However, I prefer to work with you to assist you in making choices that you can stick with, and by tweaking your diet over time in order to maintain your health and improve it slowly. Big change all at once is usually a big mistake as people rarely stick to it, so small changes to the diet one step at a time are more likely to make a long term difference.

Can you help me to lose weight?

I can help you to lose weight, but again this will be over a period of time and should never be perceived as a quick fix solution. In the long term, steady weight loss can help you to improve your lifestyle as you improve your diet, lose weight and become healthier and maybe even more active. This can help reduce or prevent the symptoms of diseases such as diabetes. It can also help you to balance your blood sugar, giving you better energy levels over the course of a whole day, rather than having highs and lows around meal times.

Weight loss is often only a small part of things usually, and long term health benefits should be considered as the eventual goal to aim for, with weight loss playing just one small part in your future well being.

Nutritional Therapy has been found to be extremely beneficial for many people, and may be just the thing that you have been looking for! If you would like to know how it can be tailored to your own personal circumstances, please get in touch via the Contacts Page.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming PDF Print E-mail

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is considered to be an approach to psychotherapy and organizational change, without necessarily being as long-term or invasive as psychotherapy can be. It can also be seen as "a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour. In contrast to mainstream psychotherapy, NLP does not concentrate on diagnosis, treatment and assessment of mental and behavioral disorders. Instead, it focuses on helping clients to overcome their own self-perceived, or subjective, problems. It seeks to do this while respecting their own capabilities and wisdom to choose additional goals for the intervention as they learn more about their problems, and to modify and specify those goals further as a result of extended interaction with a therapist."  - (adapted from Wikipedia).

NLP has been proven to be extremely effective in Business Management, Life Coaching and Self-Help areas.

What can NLP do for me?

By changing your thought processes with NLP, a person can change any patterns of negative thoughts or behaviour and turn them into more positive reactions to situations. NLP can be used for many different aspects of life, such as dealing with stressful situations, quitting smoking, improving business sales, and improving relationships at work and home. There are many different benefits to be had, and most situations can be explored using NLP techniques. All that you need to do is be committed to improving yourself or your focus in order to achieve their goals and live the life that they wish to.

What does an NLP session involve?

An initial NLP session will be used to get an insight into you, the client via a consultation and a brief questionnaire (that allows me to see which angle you approach life from), your lifestyle at present and what you wish to achieve. Then the remainder of the first session and subsequent sessions will be tailored to you as an individual. NLP does not have to be long term if you do not need it to be so. People can have a number of sessions or just two or three in the short term if they wish – and can always have booster sessions as and when they feel they need to.

An NLP session can incorporate many things, from looking at body language (both yours and others) to being able to get yourself onto another person’s wavelength, to knowing how to instantly snap into focus to boost concentration, or to improve confidence – as well as many other things. There is no hard and fast rule as to how these things are achieved as each person is different, so each session is tailored to YOU.

NLP sessions can also be tailored for groups, particularly if there is a common goal in mind, such as increasing business sales, or improving customer service. If you wish to improve your business, or help your sales team to be geared toward improved customer service, then NLP is a great way to help boost their confidence and increase their sales abilities. If your customer service is improved then your clients will always think of you first upon requiring an item, thus increasing your sales.

Massage PDF Print E-mail

What are the benefits of massage?

Massage has many different benefits available to people:

  • It can aid circulation within your body, which in turn increases the speed at which metabolic waste products are eliminated.
  • It can improve the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all cells within the body, maintaining their ability to function efficiently.
  • It can improve colour and tone of skin due to increased blood flow.
  • It aids relaxation of muscles, giving an overall feeling of well-being and reduced mental stress to the individual.
  • Tension and stress within the body is reduced due to muscle relaxation.

Do I need to have an injury in order to benefit from Sports Massage?

No, you do not need to have an actual injury in order to benefit from having a sports massage. Sports massage can be used to relax muscles before or after a sporting event, in order to improve performance, and prevent muscle stiffness after the event. It can also be used to rid the body of aches and pains resulting from everyday occurrences, such as driving, typing or sitting at a desk for prolonged periods. Everyone can benefit from sports massage.

Is there anything that can prevent me from receiving Sports Massage?

There is a term called “contra-indication”, which envelopes a number of conditions. If one or more of these conditions are present, then a massage treatment should not be carried out, or a specific area should be avoided until such time as the contra-indication is removed.

Contra-indications include:

  • Acute skin disease (such as eczema or psoriasis).
  • Open cuts or wounds.
  • Recent bruising or haemorrhage.
  • Any airborne infectious disease or virus.
  • Inflamed areas or hot pain joints.
  • Recent sprains or strains.
  • Bone fractures.
  • Bursitis.
  • Thrombosis.
  • Varicose veins.
  • Undiagnosed lumps or bumps.
  • Unstable pregnancy.

Most of these contra-indications are such that the area affected can be avoided during massage, but if unsure, a doctor should be consulted prior to a massage consultation.

If you suffer from any of the following conditions, you should consult your GP prior to undertaking a massage therapy session:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes (Type 1 and 2)
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Disorders of the nervous system
  • HIV and Aids
  • Haemophilia
  • Pregnancy (especially if unstable)

If you should be suffering from one or more of the above, it does not mean that you cannot have massage, but the therapist may have to take certain considerations into account in order to ensure that you get the most benefit from the treatment. If you are unsure about how massage can help benefit these conditions, please feel free to get in touch with any queries you may have.

Personal Training PDF Print E-mail

Why Personal Training?

Personal training is seen as a great motivational tool for many different reasons: it can help initiate you into gym life, by giving you training on how to use the various pieces of equipment properly and safely. It can provide motivation for people of all levels of experience, whether you are a beginner hoping to lose a few pounds, or if you are someone training for a marathon who requires a more specific workout. Having someone there to guide you every step of the way can provide the inspiration required to make the difference that you are looking for!

What benefits will I gain from Personal Training?

Personal training can be used to gain many different benefits for different people. In the main, it can be used to help you set and achieve your fitness goals. Everyone has a different fitness goal and Personal Training can be utilised to achieve these. Whether your goal is to lose weight, maintain a general fitness level, or train for a specific event, having a personal trainer can help give you the motivation you require to assist you in achieving them. You can become fitter quicker when provided with the motivation and support to give your all and achieve your best work in order to get fit. This in turn will provide you with higher energy levels, better focus and attention to detail, increased confidence and vitality and better health!

What can I expect from a Personal Trainer?

Your personal trainer should have your interests at heart. They will devise a personalised training schedule for your use, and coach you through it during each session. They will advise you on correct technique for different exercises, and gently encourage and motivate you. A good personal trainer will tweak and change your training routine every 6 to 8 weeks in order for it to remain challenging and interesting.

The relationship between your personal trainer and yourself should be an honest and open one. If you need to know or ask anything, you should feel that they are approachable. All personal trainers have their own methods and mannerisms towards coaching you, but it is all geared towards your benefits inevitably. I utilise the time together at our first meeting to ensure that you are comfortable working with me, and that we agree on your goals and how we can best achieve them, so that we can move forward together and work for your benefit, not mine.

Where will I be training?

You will be training in an environment that is comfortable for you – whether that be your home or workplace, or another suitable environment. I offer an exclusive service where I come to you, rather than the other way around. I’ll have all the equipment that you need with me. All you need to do is open the door to let me in!

I offer training at times that are suitable for you. However, if training is required before 9am, or after 8pm, then a slightly higher premium applies to this quality service.

How do I get started then?

Most personal trainers prefer that you book a block of 5-10 sessions at a time. This holds the advantage of keeping you motivated, as everyone likes to make sure that they get what they paid for. Many Personal Trainers also offer a discount for people who do book 10 sessions, giving you extra value for money.
Also, a contract is usually given to you, the client, outlining what is expected (punctuality etc.) from you, as well as what the Personal Trainer will do to keep their end of the deal. If there are any questions that you have, then they should be asked before the contract is signed.

I start by doing a Lifestyle MOT to allow us to assess your fitness and health, check any postural weaknesses and set your aims and goals for the sessions. Then we can move into the Personal Training sessions with clearly defined targets to achieve.

If you have any specific questions that are not answered here, please feel free to contact Vic for further information.
